Linus Pauling (two time Nobel Prize Winner) first proposed intravenous administration of vitamin C after discovering its effects while treating scurvy. Pauling and his colleagues performed the first trial with cancer in the 1970's. They determined that intravenous doses of vitamin C are cytotoxic to cancer cells.

Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) has a similar molecular structure to glucose. A healthy cell breaks down ascorbic acid into hydrogen peroxide with an enzyme called catalase then degrades the hydrogen peroxide. Cancer cells lack catalase, so they cannot break down the hydrogen peroxide, which kills the cell.

Vitamin C helps in indirect ways; such as supporting detoxification systems in the body, relieving pain, boosting the immune system, decreasing metastasis, and inhibiting angiogenesis. It can also increase the effectiveness and reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation.

Vitamin C delivered to the bloodstream in high concentrations could be a potent killer of cancer cells, especially some lymphomas, suggested researchers at the National Institute of Health. This was a brought to light in a study, looking at the effects of high doses of vitamin C on cancerous and normal cells.
